It only occurred to me recently that I’ve actually been building a career in Sustainability my entire working career.
It started with teaching Adult Literacy in the workplace in the nineties. Then broadened to consulting in training & development, organisational development & change management at PwC in the naughties. Then narrowed again to Broad-based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE) & Diversity consulting & training. And then morphed again to Performance Improvement and building Social Dialogue in manufacturing environments for the ILO. Then flowed into capacity-building for Non-Profits and then GRI-reporting as I followed my passion for finding the heart in business.
I can’t believe my luck – I’ve discovered a way of driving improvement, reducing waste, saving the planet, engaging stakeholders, developing strategies, changing hearts and minds and playing with graphs and infographics and writing all in one sphere of work!
I run a consultancy called Social Capital where I am privileged to be able to spend half my time in the corporate world making businesses “more socially & environmentally conscious” with a special focus on GRI-aligned Sustainability Reporting and carbon footprint measurement and reduction strategies and half my time in the Non-profit world making NPO’s “more business-like” with a special focus on application of King III in NPO’s.
I am a Chair of the Board of PeacePlayers International – SA, a member of the Board for PeacePlayers International based in Washington, DC, a Community Advisor/Blogger for Human Capital Institute Africa and Quality Control consultant for the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) in South Africa. I have recently completed the preliminary requirements for entry into a Master’s in Commerce (Corporate Citizenship) at UKZN.
